Enrique Fernández obtained his Bachelor and Master in Chemistry at the Universidad de Salamanca, and his PhD in Organic Chemistry from the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf. Since January, he is a Project Manager at the GalChimia site in Barcelona. His talk “Macrocycles in the Pharmaceutical Industry” will present macrocycles as a very interesting alternative to small molecules and biologics as they offer very attractive properties; however, they also present challenges. Enrique will provide an overview of these challenges, as well as describe the current role of macrocycles within the pharmaceutical industry.
Throughout his career, Enrique has been interested in the discovery and application of new chemical reactions, as well as the synthesis of biologically active small molecules, and has been involved in multiple organic chemistry and drug discovery projects in different countries.
His PhD studies focused on reaction methodology and natural product synthesis. In 2011, he joined a multidisciplinary team of scientists as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas (USA), exploring innovative approaches for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders and infectious diseases. In 2014, he took the role of Senior Scientist – Group Leader at Eurofins Villapharma Research, working on the design and synthesis of collections of bioactive small molecules for drug discovery programs. Enrique recently joined GalChimia as a Project Manager at the PCB in Barcelona.
